wakaru (Do you understand?) vs. wakatta (Understood?) - 06-17-2017, 04:05 PM

Situation:
You have explained something to a friend (perhaps you're teaching them Japanese). You want to ask if they understand.

Could you say either:

わかった? (wakatta?) - Understood?
わかる? (wakaru?) - Do (you) understand?

Would both ways sound natural to a native Japanese speaker?

Thanks!
