Go to a hairsalong with people that are young-- my friend brought a picture of Kyo from Fruits Basket, and that woman (she seemed to be around 40-50) cut it WAY too shurt and just completely wrong!
Bringing pictures are the best way to go, really! The more, the better!
Manga and J-Rock'ish hairstyles are getting more popular now, so if she's about 20 or so, she should be able to cut it better ^^
