The particle "to" means "and" while the particle "de" means "by means of." (At least I'm guessing this is how it's typically used--I'm not very good at Japanese)
Try not to pick random words out of your dictionary. Dictionaries often have pretty obscure or rarely used words. Try to pick words from a vocabulary list you're trying to memorize. (Maybe pick words from
Tanner Becker's Vocab List) However, I will continue w/ 愛郷心
