the Tokyo Tower is the symbol of Japan as the country that has suffered a lot of problems during the war and in 15 years has become one of the strongest countries in the world (economically speaking). It's a symbol that can't be taken down.
Plus, both towers will be used for broadcasting, and both will have a lot of visitors.
I find it very nice to see from high above a city like Tokyo, chaotic but beautiful. High buildings give the opportunity to see the town from different points of view: there's Tokyo tower near Roppongi, the Tokyo Metropolitan Governement Office in Shinjuku, Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, and now this new Tokyo Tower near Asakusa.
