Also I believe that it is not a soldier's job to justify the fight to himself. It's the people that lead him. Sure he is supposed to fight for his country. But more importantly he has to believe in what his government and generals are doing.
Sun Tzu wrote this hundreds of years ago in his book "The Art of War". A book still referred to in military academies across the world.

Correct on all points. Unfortunately, not all military leaders merit that power. But a soldier can rarely risk second-guessing his commander. It endangers not only himself, but countless others. However, there have been cases when a soldier's perspective has been better than that of the commanders'.
