Yes, I have had Tokyo-ites cringe in fear as they listened to my Kansai friends have a normal conversation about where to go for dinner.
It might be how New York or Boston accents can sound intimidating and like "fighting words" to West Coast boys like me, when they are just having a normal conversation.
