Edgy anime and manga being banned is certainly one I`ve never heard. I mean, you can go and buy the weirdest fetish stuff you want if you look for it. I`ve never personally heard of anything being banned.
If there is anything, I would have to think that it`s not "banned from sale", but more from being broadcast on normal TV. Even then though, there are shows with nudity on all the time.
As for censorship in pornography, well, I don`t really watch any to know for sure, but I know that in the past there was censorship of the genitals. I`m not sure if they still do that now or not.
Japan does have "free speech", it is not the same as that of the US. You won`t be blocked from saying your opinion or arrested, etc, for it. But you also can`t go around saying whatever you want where ever you want, using "free speech" as a shield like people do in the US. You WILL be kicked out of places. You WILL get in trouble for disturbing people, no matter what it is you`re saying. In other words, you can say anything you want, as long as you don`t force it on people against their wills.
