It's usually the "danger" appeal. That for whatever reason, since this guy is an asshat, he's got to be mysterious and dangerous. It's usually just what you said, provacative, which is also enticing because it draws attention. More than half the time though, it's the hot balloon theory: so big you can't miss it, but look inside and it's empty or full of hot air.
