drifting became culture in itself in the late 70s early 80s. As a sport not until the 90s.

Keiichi tsuchiya obviously being the one bringing light to drifting way back when he was tearing up events with his dorifuto style. It wasn't the crazy sideways you see today but it was definately a little bit of flare going on in the rear end.

And for an earlier post, 300zx is a horrible drift car. Rear suspension doesn't agree what drifting wants. s-chassis however do lol. Its a great highway car though!
