The Microsoft IME pad works just as well as my system, if not better, and it's faster, since you aren't sending your kanji input to Florida or Arizona and back. Also the IME pad is set up for input so you don't have to cut and paste anything.

Incidentally I thought the following system was interesting:

This claims to have 65,000 characters, so it might be good for those "very hard to find" characters. The underlying recognition engine is the open-source "Tomoe" system (mine is based on Kanjipad, plus some extensions I created myself).
