As someone with a rather extensive experience in public speaking (namely around 400 times) or perhaps just as a Japanese-speaker, I don't know why your school had taught you what it taught you. That is like the complete reverse of how most speeches are delivered. It reminded me of the political speeches delivered on the streets in Meiji Era. In present-day Japan, that style seems more appropriate for writing. The spoken language has dramatically been feminized and therefore softened during the last 100 years or so, particularly since the end of WWII.
