Do Anime DVDs in Japan usually have an option for English Subtitles?

Seems as I'm heading off to Japan in July, I've seen one or two series I want to buy there that you can't get here in the UK.

I was just wondering if Anime DVDs usually come with English subtitles as an option or not?

And the DVD region locking doesn't matter because the UK and Japan are both on Region 2

For the most part, no. They don't have English subtitles.

Why is that a shame? Do DVD's sold in your country come with Japanese subtitles?

Maybe not Japanese, but there's usually a ton of other languages like French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese and Arabic, so there's possibly some with Japanese too

Most DVDs made and produced in the US have maybe French and/or Spanish along with English subtitles for hearing impaired.

Almost the only time I have seen other languages are on DVDs in the US are not American releases and are region free sold on ebay by Hong Kong based dealers.

I am looking now at few Blu-Ray DVDs I have.

The Departed has English, Spanish and French subtitles.

The Dark Knight has English, Spanish and French subtitles.

Shogun Assassin has no subtitles.
