according to wikipedia.org the creator has no intention on ever continuing the show. Even after people made thousands of paper flowers (or was it cranes? read it a few months ago), begging her to continue.

I agree that the Fruits Basket DVD series got me kinda angry by ending so abruptly......

I actually don't want them to continue it in anime form since some plot elements were left out of the anime. I think it would be difficult to come to a successful conclusion because of that.
As far as the ending, I guess they ended it the best way they could with the material they had available from the manga. Illustrious Keeper of Plastic Tree (Arimura Ryutaro, Hasegawa Tadashi, Nakayama Akira, and Sasabuchi Hiroshi)
