Teaching English w/o a degree! - 01-11-2008, 02:39 PM

Hey!
I was an exchange student in Japan a couple of years ago, and I'd love to teach english there for a few months next summer. The only problems are that:
a.) Im still working on my BFA!
b.) Most programs/companies have a 1 yr. contract.
Is there any way I can do this? I really don't care about salary, etc...
Yoroshiku!!

I'm not aware of a way to do so for a few months, but you might want to check out your local Japanese Consulate and ask about the JET program. There might be other exchange programs out there, and if so I'd like to know about them, too.

Well, unfortunately I'm not in Australia, New Zealand or Canada so that helps me very little. Although I do now have a new search term. It looks like TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a fairly world-wide recognized certification company. I may get certified after I finish my degree.

You should be made aware that Japan makes it very difficult to get a work visa without a Bachelors or Masters degree. You might want to consider earning a teaching degree first then going. If you are confident in the language, you might think about attending school there, as well. I don't know how hard it is for foreign students to go to school in Japan, though.
