french help - 01-22-2009, 11:44 PM

I have to write about celebrities for french, and I was just wondering if someone could check this sentence for me, please.
It's supposed to say, "But other people think that these celebrities are useful, since they give them something to talk about."

Mais d’autres pensent que ces célébrités sont utile dès qu’ils les donnent quelques choses dont ils peuvent parler.

Thanks x

Instead of "dès" I would use "car"

It means "since" or "because". And then remove the "qu" after

and utile has an s at the end. I think. Cause theres multiple celebrities.

And I'm not sure, but i think at the end it would be "en parler"

Correct
but with the "car" it will have no really sense so keep the "dés"

Mais d'autres personnes trouvent que ces célébrités sont utiles, parce qu'elles leurs donnent un sujet de conversation.

Main problems:
Masculine/feminine cases
The middle of the sentence (dès) changes the meaning (i.e. the word is "since", not "as soon as")

"dès" means "since", but it means "since" in a time sort of way (dès le première septembre; since the first of september) or it means like "once". (dès qu'ils finissent leurs devoirs, ils peuvents aller jouer; Once they finish their homework they can go play)

So "car" would actually be the best option (It means "because", "But other people think that these celebrities are useful because they give them something to talk about."
