The first thing you probably want to do before you start is learn "Hiragana", the native Japanese alphabet, and "Katakana" which is used for writing foreign words. E.G Television= テレビ (Terebi). Notice how it sort of sounds like TV?
~~~~~~~~~~
You can easily find sites online with Hiragana and Katakana charts.
Hope that helped, goodluck!
Cool, do you own an ipod touch?
There is an application called Japanese filled with vocabulary for you to practice
Register on smart.fm
http;//www.smart.fm
Look up 'Master Hiragana'.
Click on the first link at the top, and click "study now". then do Katakana, and learn all the Kanji. When you learn the 常用漢字 (じょうようかんじ) I suggest you do verb conjugations along with it. try to pick up vocab and sentence structure when learning it so you can speak a little Japanese. Then you're set.
Hope I've helped (^_^)
@Akihiko, I choose Japanese Core 2000: Part 1 to start with, and also follow a Japanese grammar guide, is that ok too? Is the others better? (I already know Hiragana and Katakana)
Buy some kana writing practice book too. (You know the blank book that got square box for writing Chinese/Japanese characters), It may help you when you start writing too.
You may try Nintendo DS game (My Japanese Coach) that's good game too it can teach you from the basic.
