阿波踊り
 

こんばんは

先日外人さんに日本の祭り（festival) について尋ねられたのですが、話の流れから阿波踊りの 「おどるアホウに　見るアホウ、　同じアホなら踊らな損 損　えらやっちゃ　えらやっちゃよいよいよいよい」
というフレーズを説明したくて、

There are thousands of festivals in Japan.
I would like to talk about Awaodori, which is one of the most famous festivals in Japan.
In that festival, they say, "Dancing is crazy, and watching it is also crazy. Since both are crazy, why not dance?"

と申し上げたところ、"crazy" がまずかったようで、日本人は祭りを愚かなこと、と思 っているのか、といったことを聞かれたので、

No.　It is rhetorical..... humble saying.... they dare to say it sarcastically...

などといったけれども、伝わらず、「その祭りの目的は 何だ？　宗教上のものか、何かの記念のものか？」と聞 かれたので、I don't think so. They just do it annually for fun.　But I'm not sure.

と答えたので、以後、全く意思疎通ができませんでした 。

太字のところを英語でどのように説明すればよかったの でしょうか
ご教授いただければ幸いです。

過去に見てきた米国人向けの観光案内などでは、確か、

"The dancers are fools. The watchers are fools. Both are fools alike so why not dance?"

というような訳になっていたと思います。
