People tend to think different about forums and MMO's because they don't actually see or feel that person around , in the end they do have a point since you're sitting behind your computer all alone. But you do learn about the people who you interact with , getting to know them and forming bonds.

Example:

I knew a girl on this forum, never seen her in RL before.
All of a sudden we found out that we were going to the same school.
I couldn't recognize her in the massive crowd and all of a sudden she came up to me and we hung out like we were long time friends.

It is a form of socialization, though I have yet to really make any friends by talking online.
