Do Japanese students get free education in public school?
I'm pretty sure when they enter college, they need to pay tuition. How about elementary school? high school? middle school?

Compulsory education in Japan is "free". Therefore, elementary and junior high school are technically free. You still have to pay for lunches, equipment, etc. High school is not compulsory, therefore you always have to pay tuition. Same with university.
Also, preschool/kindergarten is not compulsory so is not offered for free.

Also, depending what school you can get in with grades and tests, some schools would cost more money or you'd get a tuition!

Thanks for reading!

You`re referring to private schools, or those beyond the compulsory years.
Public elementary and junior high schools have no tuition. You pay for other things, but not tuition. This is regardless of grades, tests, etc. Those are private schools, which charge for tuition outside Japan also.

Public education is always free. Part of the whole "public" thing is the fact every citizen pays taxes, the government then supplies the public education with some of that money.
