femine needs in japan

i posted a thread asking what did women in japan do when they had their period, because of the bath tradition. i mostly got answers like tampons but that wasn't what i was talking about. of couse nowadays tampons, but I'm talking edo period and times like that. i also want to know what was it like for young girls in japan back then. was hormones and growing up all mystique and secretive? like when it happened to girls in america they would think they were dying. what went on?

You know, I was really wondering about that (but for the present time). If I go to Japan with the college program, I'll be staying in families' homes. I don't know if I should just politely refuse a bath (and just use the shower) even with a tampon during that time of the month. I would never offer a bath after being in it with a tampon, but then again I don't offer baths. Being the guest and going first would be so embarrassing
