Lol, well I don't agree with you on a lot of things as well but I think that is a mighty generous score you gave me. Thanks!
I'm largely misunderstood a lot of the time because I want all parties to understand each other. Like the Tibet/China thread. If someone posted that it was the greatest country in the world and it could do no wrong, i'd educate them about it. If someone posted it was the worst country and its people sucked, i'd try and put them straight on that too, taking the opposite side. So that's why my opinions may seem "..." sometimes.
I give you um.. a 7 too actually based on the same assumption . I like intelligent people but we are different people in some respects.

Everyone is different... But if that is the reason why you like a person less... well, sounds kind-of discriminating to me :P

Anywho, although rep point system may be useful at some times (when it comes to some specific topics e.g. Japanese grammar, translation etc (so that the one who asks the question would know if the person is qualified to answer)), i think there are more than enough people around here who can correct ones mistakes and/or add something from themselves if required... And as previous posters have noted, implementation of such system would only turn in to another way of "proving oneself"... much like the post count is now to many people.

When there are fundamental things, like watching porn or whether evil exists in the world or not, it can become a heated discussion and hence a cause for dislike Even so, the actual differences in opinion are not what I personally would dislike a person for.

The rep system doesn't work the way most people here seem to think it does o.O

A bit of a technical explanation of how it works, or rather how to set it up (which can give you an idea):

Quote:
This section contains many settings that dictate how users of your forum are able to affect each other's reputation score.

* Enable User Reputation system
This is the global switch for the reputation system. If you disable this, users will not be able to rate each other nor will their scores be visible.
* Default Reputation
This is the reputation score that new users will start out with.
* Number of Reputation Levels to Display
When a user enters their User CP, they will see a list of their most recent reputation ratings. This affects how many of the latest ratings to display.
* Administrator's Reputation Power
If you wish to have administrator's wield a certain reputation power independent of their calculated score, enter it here. Otherwise, set this to 0 and they will use the same calculations as everyone else.
* Register Date Factor
The number of reputation points that a user is able to give or take is dependant on several factors, with the length they have been registered as one of them. A user's power is first initialized at 1 and then this factor and the factors that follow are used to increase it. For example if you set this to 365, every 365 days that the user has been a member of your forum, they would gain one point. So if they have been a member for five years, they would gain 5 points of power for a total of 6.
* Post Count Factor
The amount of posts that a user has can also affect their reputation power. Set this to number of posts that you want to award one point for. For example, set this to 50 and for a user with 500 posts, they would gain 10 points of power.
* Reputation Point Factor
The users current reputation score can also affect their reputation power. Set this to 100 and a user with a reputation of 1000 would gain 10 points of reputation power. If you set any of the power factors to 0, that will effectively remove that factor from having an effect on the user's reputation power.
* Minimum Post Count
If the reputation system is enabled, anyone will be able to rate a post but only users with a post count above the level you set here will be able to actually give points or take points from another user.
* Minimum Reputation Count
As with the post count above, a user must have a reputation above this level to be able to give or take points from another user's score.
* Daily Reputation Clicks Limit
This sets how many unique members that a forum user will be able to rate in any 24 hour period. Administrators can rate as many people as they wish.
* Reputation User Spread
This setting dictates how many unique members that a user must rate before they are able to rate the same member twice. The goal of this setting is to stop a member from either artificially bumping or dropping a user by repeatedly rating their posts.
Here's an explanation of how it works. Not quite the default but the best I could find without spending too much time. It gives you the idea.:

Quote:
Reputation System Introduction

vBulletin's user reputation system provides a way of rating users based on the quality of their posts. Users on the forums can add or subtract reputation points from other users by clicking the reputation link in their posts.

User reputations allow the users in your community to tell vBulletin which users are quality and which users are not. And in response to user feedback, vBulletin has the ability to label and reward users for the quality of their posts, as is indicated by their reputation.

Your Reputation points total is displayed in your UserCp.

Reputation Power

Your Reputation Power is the number of points you give when you rep someone else, and is calculated as follows;

Your Green (positive) Reputation Power is;

• One point for every 1000 posts you have made.
• One point for every 250 points of reputation you have.
• One point for each 365 days you have been a member.

Your Red (negative) repping power is half of your green repping power.

For a rep to count you must have at least 10 points, and have made at least 1 post. Non counting reps are displayed as Grey.

You can give a maximum of 20 reputation "hits" per 24 hour period, and must rep at least five different people before you can rep the same person again (Administrators are exempt from these two limits).

A number of green & golden pips are used to show other users your reputation level. The first five pips are dull green, the next five are bright green, then you can have up to 10 golden pips (after that is currently a secret).

Giving Rep

The colored pips you see below avatars are part of a feature on the forums that allows you to rate members for their posts. Everyone starts off with 10 reputation points by default, and then other members can add to or subtract from your points by clicking the "scales\cauliflower" icon shown in your posts. To see how many points you have, and also any comments people have left, check your User CP. If you haven't had any ratings yet, nothing will be shown, but if you have you'll see icons like these:

Green Icon - This means you were given positive reputation and gained points.

Grey Icon - This means the rating had no effect on your points. It could have either been positive or negative.

Red Icon - This means you were given negative reputation and lost points.
If you hover the mouse over the box below a member's avatar, their reputation level will show. The level changes according to the number of points that person has. See the post below for a list of levels and their point requirements.

The amount of points you give or take from a member when rating them is known as your "reputation-altering power."

Finally, your reputation has no effect on your activities on the forums, so don't take it seriously.

Rating Pip Points Breakdown

Each pip in it's color group has a set value.

• -99999 - User is infamous around these parts
• -50 - User can only hope to improve
• -10 - User has a little shameless behavior in the past
• 0 - User is an unknown quantity at this point
• 100 - 2 dk green blips
• 10 - User is on a distinguished road
• 50 - User will become famous soon enough
• 150 - User has a spectacular aura about
• 200 - 3 dk green blips
• 250 - User is a jewel in the rough
• 300 - 4 dk green blips
• 350 - User is just really nice
• 400 - 5 dk green blips
• 450 - User is a glorious beacon of light
• 500 - 5 dk green blips, 1 lt green blip
• 550 - User is a name known to all
• 650 -User is a splendid one to behold
• 700 - 5 dk green blips, 2 lt green blips
• 900 - 5 dk green blips, 3 lt green blips
• 1000 - User has much to be proud of
• 1100 - 5 dk green blips, 4 lt green blips
• 1300 - 5 dk green blips, 5 lt green blips
• 1500 - User has a brilliant future - 5 dk green blips, 6 lt green blips
• 2000 - User has a reputation beyond repute
As you can see from the former of the two quotes these values can be easily edited. All in all though it has no real use aside from harmless fun.

Why would anyone want a rep thingy? There shouldn't be one here. I see them on other boards....and to me they're annoying....Sorry that's how I feel. And besides. it wouldn't be fair for those who rarely come on and do post meaningfully.

Why? If they make meaningful posts more people would be giving reputation towards that post, no?

It's also based off tenure not just post count.
