Things I think are good about this system :

~It warns people of nasty or malicious people on the forum, maybe those who just like to go around being mean [haven't encountered them on here yet but I'm sure there are some lurkers around >.< ]

~ You know who to ask for help. Someone with a good rep may know a lot about Japan forums and you can ask them for help.

Things I think could potentially be bad :

~It just turns into a big popularity contest, with a lot of people feeling offended and falling out over it

~Could end up like all the other sites reputation system [like vampirefreaks which is purely based on looks]

~Could intimidate new members because those who are well known on the forum get all the attention and the new people are ignored [however I don't think that is the case on JapanForum, a lot of people talk to me and I'm new, a lot of forums just ignore you]

A possible way to solve this is to make the reputation voluntary, this has probably be suggested already. But even that comes with it's negatives [the nasty people don't have to be rated ]

You are correct, it would make this forum lesser interesting because it would be a Battle Royale for getting reputations etc..

It's actually not nearly that complicated.

All that needs to be done is a "switch" flipped in the adminCP and any values for it edited to reflect the forum's needs (how much post count affect it, how much tenure affects it, etc). After that it's really easy to understand >>;
