Here's what I understand of Japanese history. I don't know that much but here goes...

-The Japanese started out as the descendants of the Yayoi and Jomon peoples that migrated from mainland Asia.

-Originally lot's of infighting between the various clans however despite the infighting the various clans saw themselves as "Japanese" and distinguished themselves culturally in contrast to the Chinese, Mongols etc as opposed to each other.

-At some stage Japan was invaded by the Mongols but not entirely sure when. Bad weather was a factor in repelling the mongols both times.

-Ieyasu Tokugawa finally united Japan in the 17th century (I don't know how... did he conquer it all by force?)

-Japan invaded Okinawa (I think that happened after unification)

-Although the Japanese had been in contact with Europeans, it was limited and they preferred to be isolated. However sometime in the 19th century Japan began the move to modernisation and began to open up.

-Although isolated for a long time, much of their culture has a Chinese influence.

-Fought a war with Russia in the Early 20th century. Japan won that war.

-Signed a pact with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy and invaded China, Korea and much of East Asia

-Attacked the United States of America bringing the United States into World War 2

-Surrendered and occupied by the United States in 1945.

-Rebuilt their economy to become the 2nd biggest economy in the world to this day.

Yup that's pretty much all I know... Correct me if I'm wrong

x3
tokugawa ieyasu used lots n lots of tricks to become a shogun~
i believe he didn't even start off as a samurai~
forgot how, but he some how rose to power x3
and took over hideyoshi's(??) dream of the unification of japan~
he eventually did so w/ the battle of sekigahara in like 1600 i believe x]
later on, he fools the emperor by creating false ties with his family (in order become a shogun, one must be within the emperor's family x]) and becomes a shogun~ thus the start of the tokugawa shogunate.

in 1854~ matthew perry forced teh japanese to open their ports to trade w/ the us~ >.>''
this led to loads of internal conflicts x3
which eventually led to teh bakumatsu and the meiji restoration~~~ x]

japanese were also heavily influenced by koreans and a bit by the portuguese and dutch i believe x]

Alas, my love you do me wrong
To cast me off discourteously
For I have loved you well and long
Delighting in your company...
