Exams - 05-13-2008, 02:49 PM

It's exam period in the UK right now! Not sure about anyone else, who has got exams?

For this AS Level I have about 48 hours worth of exam time! That is some kind of ridiculous! Though I don't mind too much, I'm usually good at exams, but they are extremely boring and there is a lot of pressure involved. I had my Sociology AS Level exam today.

So are you doing exams at the moment? I know that SATs are on at the moment in the UK [ they are exams in Maths, English and Science tested in Year 2, Year 6 and Year 9, I think ]

Everyone says students in England are over-tested. I think so. We have, SATs, Assements at the end of each term, CATs [sort of like an IQ test, some schools do it upon entering to set you into ability order.] Some schools have entrance exams [which aren't called entrance exams, they sort of try to cover it up by saying that it's to 'assess your level' but really it's just sort of 'are you good enough.'] GCSEs are pretty important, then AS Levels and A Levels. The university stuff All very boring I know.

I'm doing 4 ^_^

How I calculated my hours is like this : On average, there are 3 Units in each AS Level. Each Unit is tested, apart from 1 Unit of technology and 2 Units of Art, and 1 Unit of Media.

AS LEVEL.

So for Media, I have 2 exams - Approx 5 hours.
Technology, 2 exams - Approx 5 hours.
Art - Timed exam - 5 hours.
Sociology, 3 exams - Approx 6 hours.

= 21 hours of exams for AS Level.

WHOLE A LEVEL.

Media 2 exams - Approx 5 hours.
Tech 2 exams - Approx 5 hours.
Art Timed exam - 10 hours [ A level is 10.]
Sociology 3 exams - Approx 6 hours.

= 26 hours.

So for a whole A level qualification that is 47 hours of testing, or thereabouts ^___^ Fun, fun

You and your AS levels. I just did A Levels back in the day >.>
I think AS levels are stupid. I guess they needed something more challenging though with so many ppl going to university.
The exam time was so annoying. Beautiful bright days and you're stuck stressing about how you're gonna do or just having to revise -_-'
Of course they'd prolly be easier if I hadn't missed so many classes
Once at uni, you do exams much more often and I guess you get used to em.

I took my final year exams last week, now I'm preparaing for SATs which take place on June 10, 11 and 12. We had to pick 7 subjects, I'm going for Catalan, Spanish, English, Catalan Literature, History of Art, Latin and Philosophy.

Yeah I know, I don't see the point. The reason for AS Levels is apparantly, basically that the drop out rate after one year was really high so people were wasting a year and leaving school without an A Level. So they brought in AS Levels which is like a qualification in it's own right, so people who drop out after 1 year still actually get something out of that year.

The university course I'm doing is purely coursework based, thank goodness for that! I'm doing Game Design and within that you are able to specialise in a certain field - everything you do is assessed to get your grade. So there will be a team of amatuer programmers, artists and designers, and your part in the product is assessed. Much better than exams!

@Suki - I think SATs where you come from are a lot different to here. They are a much higher level where you are ^_^

SATs here are English, Maths and Science. And a total waste of time! They are worth nothing, they aren't a qualification. Our school didn't even use them to set us into ability groups. They made us do CATs instead, which is like an IQ test or something.

GCSEs = piss easy, and not important unless you're planning on going to Oxford or Cambridge, in which case you need about 8 A*s.

I have my final A2s now, including 1 resit. 1 complete so far, 8 to go.

Oh? I meant like the SAT tests in the States you have to take at the end of senior year so as to be admitted into college.
