Problem with some files on my pc. - 07-10-2008, 02:30 PM

Okay um,
I just looked on my computer, and all my files are in .EXE format O_O;;
and I got no idea how to change it back, even my photoshop, guitar pro and stuff are in .exe o_o;;...
and when I open it, it goes on word pad O_O;;..

I tried to like figure it out how I could get like them all back to their normal files but it doesn't work
anyone knows what the problem is what causes this and how to get everything like back to their normal files?
it would be like a huge help if you know how to do that...

~LFA
Note: when I open it, it says: This program must be run under Win32
and win32 is?O_o;;..
winrar or...?
><

win32 is the component of windows that runs every program that you put in it. .exe is as auto-extractable file so you don't need the winrar. I dunno, try to install them again, maybe some files are missing from the folder of the softwares then win32 cannot run the programs.

Exe is an executable file extension which is what any program file which runs should be named. So when you want to launch a program to use it, that file will have the extension '.exe'.
What seems to have happened is that someone has associated the .exe files on your computer with notepad or wordpad. I dunno how that has happened exactly.. but next time right click the file you want to open, (one with the .exe extension) and from the menu that comes up choose "Run As" or "Run". This should open the program directly and not open it up in wordpad.
Let me know how it goes

It opens in wordpad when you select run?

Hmm..

You need to dis-associate '.exe' files with wordpad.

Firstly though..
When was the last time you used your PC without this problem? Also, have you installed anything since then?

Hum....I've had this problem before, it was a virus that I had contrived from a torrent. Course the day before that I was trying to convert flac to mp3 so I installed a bunch of programs from very shadey sites...I was fustrated...but anyway, the problem didn't occur until I had tried to rar the files together. When I did, all my apps opened up in wordpad or give me an error.

I would go with going into safe mode for your computer and trying to restore to a previous day. You can do this in many ways. My fav are either turning off the computer and as it's loading up in the windows screen, I turn it off from my surge protector...not a good idea, could cause slight to moderate damage to your computer, I do this only when it's being bad, lol .

The other way that I likes to do it is go to run and in the box type msconfig, youll get a little box unless it somehow deleted it, or gpoed your account into not having access. If that's the case and you can download, you can find it if you google a copy and just dump it into C:/.

If you get the box, youll see a bunch of tabs, one of them says boot.ini. If you've ever been in safe mode before youll recognize the tab safe mode and by process of elimination, youll know what the checkboxes do next to it, for this case go with just the minimal check checked, then restart. It' will do it's funky funk ness, usually it will ask you if your intentions are to go to a previous day, in which you press yes and it will take you to a calander looking thing and you can try to pick a day. Sometimes not all the days work, just try each one on a day you know your computer was working well, it's pretty sporadic, ive had it work on days that all i did was update flash and not work on days that i presonally set as days that I think are good backup days. Of course this won't work if you don't have this feature enabled. If for whatever reason you don't. I would suggest just starting from scratch and reinstalling windows from hopefully a reinstallation cd that came with your computer or a geniune installation cd. In any case before you go reinstalling if you have had to go this far to fix it. Make sure you get your installation key from your computer, you can do this by going to google and typeing "bean xp cd key finder. Should take you to the right site, this program will extract your installation key. It's important if you don't have it on paper, otherwise youll have to buy a new one(130 something dollars). Anyway hopefully you won't have to do this.

One other thing you can try, It didn't work for me but works for most viruses. Is going to msconfig once again and going to the services tab and then click on hide all microsoft services. Take a quick scroll through the services and if your recognize anything important like say, the name of your wireless card or maybe the name of your mouse if you have a custom mouse or keyboard, make sure that you have those checked everything else uncheck. Then going to startup and unchecking everything, except for something REALLY IMPORTANT. Hopefully this will prevent it, if it really is a virus from starting up and allow you the freedom to remove it. After you do this restart and see if it lets you run programs correctly.

hope that helps.

Now if your exe files that are suppose to end in exe like, word.exe, iexplorer.exe run in notepad, then thats a different issue then your picture/music/data files ending in exe and opening in notepad.

LOL yeah, but it's better if you try all your options and try to save your work. I know ps resource files, siggies, fonts, etc are a pain to reget and music stuff is even worse. But anyway good luck with it.
