I used to be a pretty shy person (especially when it came to meeting new people, not to mention several at once!) but I found myself in situations that would bother me more than most and just forced myself to do what I had to. For example... Picking up a girl I'd never met before, where she was hanging out with family and such. (as opposed to just random public situations like walking around the mall or going to a bar)

I smoked a cigarette in my car, shut off the engine and just walked into her job like I'd been doing it forever. Her sister and brother and co-workers had no idea who I was so I just said hello to everyone, and found the girl Jamie. She was surprised to know I'd just come right in and if anything thought it was pretty cool of me not to be intimidated by such a situation after I'd previously explained I can be on the shy side. Then instead of leaving we sat on a sofa bullshitting for an hour or so while her family and customers watched us the whole time. That would have normally made me feel really weird but I had already put myself in a certain mood by then. I could tell her sister was making funny faces at her because she would look past me every now and then and giggle. Finally one of her regulars yelled "take her to the nice diner across the street!" and I did. I haven't really felt uncomfortable in public since.

My advice is to find something that would REALLY bother you as far as being shy and just DO IT. Wherever you are, just pretend like you own the place. Afterward, things like you described seem like no big deal at all. Getting over it is about being nervous or scared and just going for it once or twice anyway. In no time you'll feel more confident.

That is one way I got passed it. You're younger than me but it doesn't mean you can't try. I can almost guarantee you won't regret it.

I can't really suggest anything since any idea I can think of has already been altered and posted by another user. It is a confidence issue, it would be a good idea to work on it now because there is a chance that it can follow you and effect you socially.
I can't really comment on the female - Male situation, what I can do is just practice a plan of action in your hand and then act it out, the worse thing that can happen to you is that you get some embarrassment, which if you just keep on going and not backing out, will help boost your confidence level. (I'd suggest that you don't grab a guy you like, wrestle him to the ground, then tell him he now belongs to you...though that may work on the shy nerdy guys, atleast in america it does.

@Sound- That is the cutest story ever. To meet somebody and get over social awkward-ness... Great package!

Thanks for reading!
