I've been to Shanghai twice this year, and neither time was a pleasant experience. During the most recent trip one of my officemates made the mistake of drinking a glass of water from the tap in our hotel room (brand new hotel) and contracting dysentary.

The "atmosphere" was so heavily polluted that it was nearly impossible to see buildings more than one kilometer away. The streets in our high-end district were reasonably clean, but smelled of sewage and garbage. I was afraid to eat or drink anything at any of the restaurants, cat and dog were both on the menu at a couple of places.

I developed a terrible cough on my second day there, and the cough persisted for almost 2 weeks after I returned. I won't go again.

If that was his experience, then that was his experience. No need to insult.

You are the one that asked the question. But if you want to quit so easily, that is your choice.

Japan is the obvious choice for me as I'm studying the language and want to get better at it.

I'd love to visit China though... Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai interest me as does Tibet.
