The alienation of people’s minds through the Internet - 08-08-2008, 09:32 AM

After I watched Serial Experiments Lain some ideas caught my mind. I was thinking with myself about the new way of life that the people is acquiring through the Internet. The new generation that was born when the Internet already was a consolidated way of communication would have a different point of view on things or maybe a different way of life? I don’t think everybody is happy with the way they are, so through the Internet you can create a new "ego" that would be moulded to fancy one’s desire.

Maybe now it still has so many limitations, but in the near future what will happen with thousands of lonely introverted people who spend so many time online, just because they’ve got a hard time to make friends in the real life, also this kind of people usually have a better knowledge at it, so maybe could they create their own world where they can be who they want to be and meet other people like them?

Of course something like this is already happening, but I’m thinking what it will look like in an advanced way with improved features of all known currently technologies and when people already were born in a world built like this. The relationships between people always had so many difficulties so they always try to make the things easier.

Actually, the people is always running from reality and creating their own dream worlds through the endless forms of art they avoid the sadness and the boredom of the common life watching movies, playing games, reading books and so on, where they find different worlds with characters who live more interesting lives in more interesting places.

In the manga version of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gendou said to Shinji, that the human being is a sad creature, because it doesn’t matter how much they try, they’re completely unable to understand each other. But as a social being people need each other not only to live, but to achieve some kind of happiness, but as they couldn’t understand each other completely it leaves so much sadness and disappointment...

Will the people in the future avoid every single direct contact with each other to avoid them to hurt themselves? Will they live the dream of such a virtual life? Sorry if it sounds stupid…

I think we're already halfway if not more there.

I've thought about this myself.
My 4-year-old brother can work and surf the internet by himself, download his own videogames and play them, and even search and read (he taught himself how to read) articles that interest him. Mind you, he doesn't get much time on the computer, but he grew up observing our use of the internet, and therefore, may have absorbed it as a natural part of life.

I've also noticed this in language.

As a baby, our minds are free of many of the influences of past experiences, so any new knowledge we obtain, we can familiarize with on a more focused level -- at a more pure level.

Have you ever wanted to speak fluent Japanese? Well, there's probably a 5-year-old Japanese child out there that has already achieved that level of knowledge... And, theoritcally, did so with significant ease.

It almost goes without saying, one could easily conclude - or even gaurantee - that, in the future, mankind will become so close to virtual reality and technology that many new complications will arise in society and in general life.

We may not be flying around in cars, but it's those kinds of dreams that make us aim and, ultimately, progress towards a higher level of accomplishment.

The future will be interesting, without a doubt.
