This is a little off topic but why would anyone want to learn spanish? for the cultural value? what for? seriously... "Tengo un gato en los pantalones" ( I have a cat in my pants) lol... I have curiosity... since I had never heard before of someone wanting to learn spanish... aside from local americans... but that is because they LIVE here.

Every language opens some doors. Except for maybe extinct ones.

Well, if you go by numbers alone, once you move south of L.A. or Miami, you'll get by with Spanish till Mexican border, south of that one it's spanish speaking till you reach Fireland - with the exception of Brazil. The ancient history is still being pieced together, the history from the conquistadores onwards is well known and a sad one. As for today's culture... check youtube for 'reggaeton' , 'urbano' , there's more to it than just Dayddy Yankee's Gasolina ( and he isn't singing about petrol )...

I agree, and not only for that, but music too! Latin choir music is my absolute favourite type of music in the world. I'd also love to look at Ancient Roman finds and be able to translate them

I speak English as my first language, studied Japanese for 2 years, and have to study Spanish for a year as part of my Travel and Tourism course.
If I still have enough space in my brain after dealing with Spanish, I'd love to learn Welsh or Korean.

I learnt to speak French and English at the same time; in our house we spoke French to my father and English to my mother.

Am I the only one who feels that knowing French, Spanish or Portuguese helps my Japanese!?
