People Too Afraid of The Internet?

A log from a chat I had just now.
Names were starred out and some corrections made to my own spelling.

* 207 (21:10:51): Hi! I'm *** from **.

** (21:11:35): from where?

* (21:11:47): **********, heh, sorry.

**(21:12:07): ah,ok

* (21:12:41): So..you said feel free to contact me. Lets get to know eachother a bit? ^_^

**(21:13:04): um,ok... just don't make it too personnal

* (21:13:36): I"m a little confused, did you get the idea I was coming on to you somehow?

** (21:14:10): no but, I don't know you so... I am being cautious

* (21:14:57): Ah..well, I'm happily in love right now so, no worries!
** (21:17:23): uh yea, ok
** (21:17:36): your probably not near my age anyways

* (21:18:17): Wow...you are..really, really cautious. Whatever. No way I'm going to be able to have an interesting convo about anime or Japanese food with you >.>
* (21:18:36): What would age have to do with talking about similer interests?

** (21:19:09): nothing, look you don't understand that there ARE criminals who use the net
**(21:19:14): to get what they want

* (21:19:41): I do understand this, completely. One of my friends was nearly abducted because she got to into a guy online.
* (21:19:46): I'm not stupid.

** (21:19:56): did I say you were... NO
** (21:20:00): quit assuming

* (21:21:45): Why should I? For all i know you could be an online rapist
* (21:22:07): I wouldn't know if you were now would I?

**(21:22:14): oye, whatever... I don't need this nonsense from an immature teenage boy

* (21:22:44): But yet, I dont care because I didn't plan on giving you any personal information and wanted a convo about similer interests.

Then user proceeded to go offline before my last message had passed though.

Now..what had just happened was very strage to me..maybe because I'm such a open and friendly person most of the time or because she was so sheltered and cautious. But it was odd.
Has the internet make people afraid of talking to others for fear of something to happen to there well-being?

X3 well I always get this weird story from my friends who heard it from a friend who knew this girl, that meet someone online invited them over and got raped or some crap..... which i dont believe a word of it, i think people worry to much about the danger of the all powerful internet due to the fact that they cant face to face interact with someone, and it makes them nervous and scared for no reason, cause you can totally get butt raped by a guy or girl your talking to face to face. but yeah i think people are unrealistical afraid of the internet.

darksyndrem 08-01-2009 01:51 AM

Wow, that is really weird.......surprised this happened to YOU O___O...this wasn't that one girl was it? The one you told me about earlier?

We can blame this guy for encouraging internet-related panic. Just have common sense and make yourself safe at all cost. That's all you need.

I really agree with this. NBC Sucks. "Lets make a program about online predeters!" Just to booth there ratings. There is almost no information on it and the online thing we get out of it a few "That guy is disgusting" from the people watching at home, so they keep tuning in to see what other sick bastards they can reel in.

Well, that short conversation was...interesting to say the least, lol. I mean, you can still be friendly and pleasant without giving any personal info, so what's the big deal? And one thing I don't see what people don't understand, if you feel pressured or something, give false info. If the predator does, so can you. Say you're Taz Kwando from Madagascar when you're really Sarah Joe from Pennsylvania. Of course, the best info is no info at all, but in theory I think it'd be funny. Though, I'm not really up-to-date with technology, predators can't track the exact location of your computer via satellite/internet, can they?
