Generally learning a language is a lot more then just studying it or taking a class. That will not teach you Japanese on a long term level. You have to actually use it in your everyday life. I suggest getting some sort of pen pal or friend who speaks the language or at the very least watching a new flick in the Japanese without subtitles.

Also don't be so negative. Life is only as bad as you make it! Chill out, what happens happens, you're not dead and you got food water and from what it sounds like shelter! So make the best of the situation and count your blessings!
