Sakura Trees

Are they common in foreign countries? I see some around a school in my neighborhood, (Is it common to see them in foreign lands? I live in south USA so we have more of a humid climate

They are quite common around my area in northern Kentucky. A few of my neighbors have them in their yard.

Washington DC is known for its cherry blossoms- actually Japanese imports. I noticed quite a few blooming cherry trees when I was in New Zealand in October last year. Cherries are eaten in lots of countries so I think we can assume that cherry trees are fairly widespread.

The 'sakura' trees that are famous for the blossom though don't actually fruit properly. They're ornamental trees.

In england there are cherry trees here and there, but not too common a sight as they're hard to keep and get diseased easily so they don't plant them on common land much. Most seem to be european types as well. Oddly people seem dead keen on importing japanese maples, but not the cherry.
