I noticed that I'm not a part of any. What are they, I haven't seen them at all.

Look at anyone's profile. Bottom right hand corner is a box listing public groups the member belongs to or else "BLAH BLAH is not a member of any public groups". That's what the OP is talking about.

I don't know much about them other than that.
