Do you want to become a Japanese citizen? - 03-25-2007, 07:39 PM

For those like me planning to move to Japan permanently someday, do you want Japanese citizenship?

Not sure, Only time will tell.

I want to be as Japanese as possible, so I'll get it.

The requirements I know of are: at least five years of residency in Japan, have a place to live, and be able to financially support yourself.

Why not? If I'm to live in Japan I might as well be a citizen.

In America it takes ten years. Also, you have to be married to an American citizen. I think they should make the length of residency shorter.

Actually the length for citizenship in Japan may take just as long as in the US. The Japanese government is also considering a move that will make a certain level of Japanese proficiency mandatory even just for being a migrant worker such as the South Americans that live near my city. Even just getting a work visa that lasts longer than one year could take up to two years.

About me, no I would not opt for citzenship. Permanent residency in the unlikely event I stay here for a long time but not citzenship. First reason being is that right now I am exempt from paying into the pension program which saves me quite a lot of money each month. Second reason is that other than voting, my rights are no different than Japanese. Third reason, my passport is a hell of a lot better looking and who would want the trouble of carrying two of those things.
