Actually the length for citizenship in Japan may take just as long as in the US. The Japanese government is also considering a move that will make a certain level of Japanese proficiency mandatory even just for being a migrant worker such as the South Americans that live near my city. Even just getting a work visa that lasts longer than one year could take up to two years.
About me, no I would not opt for citzenship. Permanent residency in the unlikely event I stay here for a long time but not citzenship. First reason being is that right now I am exempt from paying into the pension program which saves me quite a lot of money each month. Second reason is that other than voting, my rights are no different than Japanese. Third reason, my passport is a hell of a lot better looking and who would want the trouble of carrying two of those things.
