Wifi in Japan ? - 01-18-2011, 03:00 AM

How readily available is Wifi in Japan ? Im curious because I have an iPhone / iPad and wll be bringing it with me but wanted to know if there is any need to sign up for a phone service or whatever. I figured Japan would be high tech enough that there would be no need to ya ?

thoughts ??

Japan did not get on the Internet bandwagon as fast as some other countries, and therefore a behind in some aspects. Free wifi is one of them.

McDonald's has free wifi, but I think it only works on Nintendo DSi devices.

It is quite hard to get free WI-FI anywhere there.... I didn't get any at all. Even the Shinkansen offers free WI-FI (from what I've heard) but I didn't encounter it....

It's available, but it's not free. You'll find wifi at McDonald's, Starbucks, and the like, but you'll need to pay for it. I am writing this reply on my iPad using Docomo's pocket wifi, which runs about 5000 yen per month for unlimited service. You need to sign up for a 2 year contract to get it, and you need a alien registration card to get a contract.

Wireless is a maybe, but there should be wired in all the rooms. Bring your own cord if you want something longer.... i.e. away from the desk so you can surf and watch TV.

mmhh.. I think that is quite a confusing question for many. I asked the same topic on a different board a while ago..

Some will tell you it's possible and that there are many Hot Spots (for free) around Japan.. and some will tell you, that it's hard to find them and that they are not really useable without a set amount?!

I am really stuck right now, whether I should by a Smartphone or not?! lol^^

also here.. FREESPOT

and.. 公衆無線LANサービスはYahoo!無線LANスポット - Yahoo!無線LANスポット
