Post 80-year old man cycles cross country, gets killed by truck on last home stretch - 06-28-2007, 08:25 AM

80-years old and biking across country. Amazing!

More amazing is that after biking for nearly 14 months, the fellow was hit by a truck and killed just 40 kilometers (25 miles) from home...
What is it they say? Most accidents happen within 25 miles of home? (Of course, people spend most of their lives within 25 miles of their home, too.)
Kamesaburo Harano was hit by a truck from behind while riding along a curved section in a tunnel.

i read about it the other day.it's sad story.what a remarkable old fellow.he didn't deserve dying that way.
i have a neighbor.he is 85 and he still cycles every day.it's good to see old ppl who still do things that a little bit younger ppl do

I bet that most of the young people these days would not be able to keep up with this guy... he really did not deserve a death like that...

14 months? I do enjoy a bit of fresh air now and then (yeah, I get up from my computer and everything ... it's amazing) but ... 14 months? That's really amazing, and very, very sad that he died like that. And so close to home, too, after being gone so long. That's a really admirable person, someone who definitely didn't deserve to die in that way. =////

Oh man. Cycling in Japan (at least in Gunma) is dangerous. I've seen mild accidents (bicycles clipped by cars) and more serious ones (guy on scooter hit by truck).

When I bought my bike, I was told by a friend, "You WILL get get by a car. Everyone I know (except for me) has gotten hit by a car."

And guess what?

I did.
