Old Vase with Important man

I bought a old vase or urn from a garage sale. I think it is Japanese but I am not sure. It has pictures on it of a very prominent man in uniform. It also has a symbol on the lid with his picture again. It also has a signature on the bottom.
I want to know who the man is. I also want to know what the symbol means on the lid. And who signed it on the bottom.
It is hand painted with lots of gold on it. Can someone that knows Japanese tell me in English about it?
