Because the 850 is a triband phone...and the d900 is a quadband. generally you need a quadband phone to use it in north america..but some carriers don't require you too. So who would be your phone provider? Also, the 850 doesn't have EDGE...a setback, seeing how its way better than GPRS. I can't vouch for samsung phone reception, seeing how I've never used one before. But SE phones have always had amazing reception for me (they are my phone of choice ).In the end, they're not THAT different from each other. THings to keep in mind when making the final choice:

They're both just as good. What one lacks the other one makes up for. I'm stuck between choice. Maybe I'll just be biased and get the Sony Ericsson just because it's Japanese lol
