HALLOWEEN in Japan ???

Hello from Germany!

Hey there, this is Lars from hamburg (north of germany). I've got a question:

What's up with HALLOWEEN in Japan?

Nowhere in the internet I found some informations about this special topic, so now I ask YOU :) Maybe you can help me ...

Do the Japanese celebrate this holiday? If yes, what are the differences between their celebration and the way Americans celebrate this holiday? Or isn't there any Halloween-stuff in Japan yet ...?

Would be so great if anyone of you would tell me about it :vsign:

Have a nice day!!

Greets,
Lars

They probably do.

We celebrate Halloween despite being an American feast; kids get into costumes and go asking for candy and everything. Next we'll be celebrating Thanks Giving Day...

masaegu 09-03-2007 02:47 PM

What is Holloween? And why are we expected to celebrate it?

Do you guys celebrate Obon or Shougatsu?

Suki 09-03-2007 02:51 PM

Wow I was pretty sure it was widly known all around the world.

So here: Halloween - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Put it into Japanese if it's easier for you to understand ^.^

A friend of mine that lived in Japan for a few years claimed that Japan didn't celebrate Halloween, though they had some occasions (like certain concerts or parties at clubs) that had a "Halloween" theme.

deadthinker 09-11-2007 02:36 PM

i heared they didnt celebrate it from a friend there but there are pictures on this forum taken in japan of children in halloween costumes
*is confused*

They have other holidays to celebrate rather than Halloween On that day... It's similer though. Japanese have more holidays than americans you know...? So its expected that some holidays we have, they don't... And TONS of holidays they have we won't. It's mostly based on religion.

From my info source,..sometimes(or all the time)
People in japan dress up an walk out in the streets like it was normal...here you'd get made fun of....:pinkcry:

正月, Shougatsu? Of course we celebrate New Year.
御盆, Obon? No, unfortunately we don't celebrate Bon festival in this country. Well, a few of us do, but mostly in Hawaii.

heh, I dress up a little at random sometimes...as in, wear a hakama or something odd like that, that average people don't wear...and I have very funky hairstyles...I get odd looks and comments, but I haven't been made fun of. quite the opposite, actually...I think people wish they had the gumption to it themselves.

kireikoori 09-12-2007 12:53 AM

I find matching clothes to be unnecessary. I'm glad many Japanese people feel the same way.

Halloween has been getting bigger every year since I arrived.
I expect over 100 people to attend my Halloween costume party this year.

I will have pics on my blog after the party.

looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

ButterflyDemise 09-15-2007 09:43 AM

Maybe one year I'll be able to come to Japan around Halloween time~ I think it would be a great experience (^^) Especially if you can get tickets to that yearly(?) concert thing in Tokyo.

lucky!=)
it seems people feed off the torment of those they think fall in to place lower than they do where I live. However, that doesn't seem to effect me.
i quite enjoy the reactions i get from coming to school in my favorite gothic lolita dress, a pair of cat ears, some army boots, make up, and floresent striped socks(lime green or purple). then the next day it's a pair of jeans, converse and my fave band tee. then the next day something extreme...etc.
it really depends on my mood...
'im pretty much the resident weirdo at my school.
cool..
it doesn't matter what they think, because i am gonna be famous,
wether that makes me a sellout or not,
i couldn't give two f***ing shits.
halloween is my fave holiday!
and no, i'm not just being stereotypical..f*** you.

fear the double post! augh!

heh, awesome. I applaud doing what you want/believe, despite how society or the people around you feel about it (with a few exceptions.) heh, I'm not sure how I feel about attempting to get famous as a form of revenge...but if it floats your boat, go for it.

haha new years celebration in the US is really different than that of japan. shit, i wouldn't mind taking off of work for three days and celebrate the coming of the new year. because i'm still young, it's more of a party night rather than a mochi and family type of day. we stay up all night partying and burning fireworks and basically get drunk.

obon, yeah we celebrate that here in hawaii. it's probably on a smaller scale than that of japan also, but it's here. i used to go when i was a child, but i'm too old for it already. i remember the last time that i went though, there were mostly little children and a lot of old people dancing.

Masegu's point is that Halloween is an American holiday, so why should people in Japan be expected to celebrate it. Just as Obon is an Japanese holiday, so we don't recognize it in America.

And even here in the U.S. where we warped the even of All Saints Day and Samhain into Halloween, it gets very distorted according to the community/area you are in.

Scoob94P 05-19-2008 03:39 PM

They celebrate halloween but it isn't as important and not many people dress up or take it seriously, they're more fussed with christmas + valentines, more major holidays I think,, atleast that's what i read in a magazine
