There are two variations on "paying for a dating website." If you're paying on a normally free site, you're paying for additional features. If you're paying for a pay-to-use website, you're paying to be part of a community.
In the former case, I don't think there's much reason to pay. The benefits I'm aware of tend to include things like increased message capacity, knowing when your messages have been read, being able to see user ratings, being able to look at profiles invisibly, and other similar minor benefits. If you're insecure, and you lie awake at night wondering if your messages are getting read, or worried about what someone will think because you looked at their profile, I get the appeal, but I think you'd be better off working on your insecurity instead of spending money to accommodate it.
