Few theaters to screen controversial 'Yasukuni'

Movie theaters in Osaka, Hiroshima and Kyoto have decided to screen a controversial documentary on Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine.

The decision came after five theaters in Tokyo and Osaka cancelled plans to show the film. The film titled 'Yasukuni' is directed by Chinese director Li Ying. It features a number of people connected to the war-related shrine. However, it has been criticized by some ruling LDP lawmakers for being funded by a government-sponsored organization.

The screening schedule includes the Seventh Art Theater in Osaka in May, Salon Cinema in Hiroshima in June, and Kyoto Cinema in August.

The manager of Salon Cinema said he wants to respond to growing calls to screen the documentary, and it is regrettable that some theaters in Tokyo cancelled their plans.

The distributor of the movie says it is currently negotiating with about 10 theaters across Japan.

The movie won the Best Documentary Award at this year's Hong Kong International Film Festival.
