Unhappy Long-running newspaper cartoon ends - 03-08-2007, 09:55 PM

Thursday, March 8, 2007
A serialized cartoon carried in a Japanese newspaper for the longest period ever reached its last installment on Thursday at 15,451.

"Honobono-Kun" initially appeared in the Tokyo Shimbun on and off since 1956, depicting mainly tender interactions between children and small animals, and six national papers also carry the cartoon, sometimes dubbed the Japanese version of Charlie Brown. The Tokyo Shimbun announced on the front page of its Thursday morning editions that Kimihiko Tsukuda, a 77-year-old cartoonist, has decided to leave the work as Parkinson's disease has disabled him to paint with a brush.

Parkinson's - poor guy. His readers are probably wondering what to read from now on... it's probably a bit like the end of an era for them.

"It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -from the film Coach Carter

It`s really unfortunate that he is no longer able to continue...

But I have to say, I never even realized there WERE any comics running in Japanese newspapers. I know I`ve never seen anything other than that "Let`s follow traffic rules!" girl one that is supposed to be funny but NEVER IS.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

Dont worry kitski, i'll draw some cartoons for u so u won't be sad...

Well, why don't the japanese newspapers start re-publishing the old comic strips (if that's what they call it in Japan) of Honobono-Kun? I don't think even the most rabid fan of that cartoon strip would even remember the stories of the 1st few issues... It's like 40 years ago or something...

Japan does not understand very well that one of its proudest cultural achievements is in film--- Akira Kurosawa
