Tokyo Tower turns green for St Patrick's Day - 03-18-2007, 08:57 PM

Sunday, March 18, 2007
Tokyo Tower was lit up in green on Saturday night to celebrate St Patrick's Day. The green illumination of the 333-meter-tall television tower was also to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the bilateral ties between Japan and Ireland.

Irish Network Japan, a non-governmental organization aimed at promoting cultural exchange between Ireland and Japan, organized a photography contest of the green-lit Tokyo Tower for amateur photographers, it said on its website. Eight parades will be held in Tokyo and other cities across Japan this weekend.

333 meters tall? That is one tall tower.

Wonder what the historical background of this Japanese-Irish celebration is?

"It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." -from the film Coach Carter

I know you can barely see it, but I don't use photo hosting sites and have not uploaded it to my public MySpace page. So, squint as hard as you can.

It wasn't all lit up, just the areas that already have lights on them were in green. Interesting fact, Tokyo Tower is 333 meters compared with the Eiffel's 330 m.

Oh and I have no idea how they got that color out of it. That was as close as I went to the tower that night.

Here is another one for you. Note the Irish flags. Taken near Harajuku.
