fire on mountain in KYOTO farewell to souls of ancestors - 08-17-2010, 02:33 PM

Fiery farewell

Tuesday 17th August, 12:30 PM JST

Spectators observe a fire in the shape of the Chinese character ‘‘dai’’ (large) on a mountain in Kyoto on Monday night. The fire was one of five giant bonfires lit on mountains surrounding the city. The festival is held to bid farewell to the souls of ancestors that return to the world during the Bon season, according to folklore.
