Yes, usually. The same is true in America, too.

Whoa.... I don`t know where you`re looking, MMM, but that is WAY off. There is NO way it`s going to take 5 hours from Kanazawa to Takayama. It`s less than 3 hours by train, and the train is only 2500 if you don`t take the express (a difference of about 15 whole minutes - 4200 if you do take the express).
A bus from Kanazawa takes a little over 3 hours and costs 3300.

In this case, the train is indeed cheaper.

I am thinking that maybe you accidentally searched for something else for the train info? Kanazawa and Takayama are fairly close. Maybe you hit Kanagawa instead?

That's directly from the link I posted in my first post.

It seemed high to me, too, but the Internet wouldn't lie, would it?

Thanks for clearing it up!

Wow. I hadn`t actually checked the link, having found the same bus rates elsewhere.

That`s really horrible. Looks like they`re trying to trick you into taking their bus rather than the train. :rolleyes:

i checked hyperdia..

if your going to take a local train, that's the one that takes 5 hours and cost 2520yen

the limited express(unreserved seat ) takes 2 hours ++ and costs 4820 ..

i think japan guide put the wrong information might be a typo ..

As far as I know, it never takes 5 hours. The most is 3 hours + (plus how much depends on how well you plan the change of trains.)

You`d literally have to try to make it take 5 hours by avoiding any of the faster trains and only taking the slowest local trains. No one does that. Sure, it`s technically possible by avoiding any train that doesn`t stop at every station, but I think it`s very irresponsible to consider the maximum time it could take. Especially when they`re comparing it to the minimum time the bus could take...
