You got your answer.

Unless you are going to marry a Japanese lady, you are SOL.

In all honesty, if you are looking for an answer that please you, this is not the place for it.

We all have similar or the same answer in all aspect. You want to live in Japan, you need a job that belongs to a professional category, which require a university degree.

There is a reason why its called a "minimum requirement", because, well, thats the bare minimum

2. I have US$20,000 in checking and none in savings, also, US$300 in notes --or enough to live for a year, maybe less.

I'm planning to go to Japan for 3 months and i was thinking of taking $20,000. Since you mention that that amount would be enough for up to a year, how much would you recommend for 3 moths?
That includes food, Travel expenses in Japan ( not from and to ), Gaijing House, etc...

Open a new thread and we can discuss..... there is a similar thread about "Money Worries" or something to that extent, should give you a rough average of the cost
