holidays in japan - 09-06-2009, 03:22 PM

I will be arriving in Japan later this week to work as an ALT.

I would like to buy my sister a ticket to come and visit me as a farewell present

Are there any weeks before Christmas that all schools are on holiday because I would prefer not to be at work when she is here.

Alternatively are there any other holiday periods that are guaranteed throughout the country at any time during the academic year?

You do get a Christmas/New Years break, but I don't know the exact dates...

Before Chiristmas, there will not be a whole week when schools are closed.

After the two-week long winter recess (approx. Dec. 23 - Jan. 6 ), the next one will be the Spring Break (approx. Mar. 25 - Apr. 4). The next will be the Golden Week (Apr. 29, May 1,2,3,4,5, 8,9). If you can somehow have May 6 and 7 off, you will have a week-long vacation. Then there will be the summer recess (approx. Jul. 20 - Aug. 31).

Note: Winter recess is longer and the summer recess is shorter in colder regions.
