Depends on someone's definition of fun. I had a great time snorkelling, scuba diving, eating and lying on the beach when I went to Ishigaki.

In mainland Japan, I am afraid Japan is the wrong country for beautiful, laidback coastal scenery, this country is very developed and the coastline anywhere near any city and even in the rural areas tends to be concreted over/garbage covered. Ishigaki Island however is just beautiful- and a loooong way from mainland Japan.

Ishigaki is indeed very beatifull.
There are nice beaches on the Southcoast of Shikoku and the Northcoast of Chugoku. If you get a rental car i could recommend some stretches along those coasts. The beaches are usually not crowded (i was there in early summer), good for surfing but a bit difficult to reach by public transport.

Oh, the ilands between Shikoku and the Mainland have some nice beaches to.
