Talk to a travel agent about going through Seoul or other parts of Asia. It makes for a longer trip, but a cheaper flight.

The three main airports are LAX, San Fran, and San Jose. I always get the cheapest ticket and have flown through all three from LA or San Diego (sometimes it's cheaper to stop over San Fran and San Jose by 1 hour flight).

Next is timing. Prices often doubles during summer and winter, especially peaking at holidays and Christmas. My last flight in August was $500 tax included (Singapore) thanks to H1N1, but any time I avoid the peak seasons it's anywhere from $500 to $800. Certain days are going to give you more choices (for example, Singapore only flies on certain days). You can use Orbitz for price comparison, then go to an agent and see if they can beat it.

Cheapest flight I ever took was $400, most expensive was $1100 during summer.

Go to Priceline, get a quote for tickets, and then bid your own price. I've been quoted $1200 for a round trip ticket, and bid my own price of $700 and had it accepted. You might end up with a longer layover or an extra connection, but you can save a lot of money.

stephen, commercial is not allowed here.

OT: about japan, i suggest looking trough different sites of flight companies to compare wich is the most suitable for you.

usually prices include tax and a free meal, but be sure to ask.

for cheaper flights you might want to reserve in time. the shorter the time period, the less you can choose different flights.
