Worried about Getting from Takayama to Magome? - 03-20-2010, 12:08 PM

Please help me with train and bus timetables to get from Takayama to Magome on Sunday April 4th.

It seems I can take the train from Takayama to Gero. But I am not finding times or locations for the bus to Nakatsugawa and then to Magome. Help?

Thank you!
Nicoletta

You can't go from Gero to Nakastugawa directly by bus.
Gero St.→Kashimo→Nakastugawa→Magome.
Gero St.→Kashimo

06:17,09:00,12:35,16:05,18:30. That's all on Sunday.

I read your old posts.
You will be with 8-year-old daughter and you use 7-day JR passes, right?
So,I think it is better for you to use JR as possible as you can.
Recommend route
Takayama→Mino Oota→Tajimi→Nakatugawa.JR Train.
Nakatsugawa→Magome.Local bus.

Please inform of your travel plans, i.e.Departure or Arrival time, location of accommodation on that day, etc.
I can give you more efficient info.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, we will have our JR passes. We will be in Takayama overnight on Saturday the 3rd, then stay Sunday night at the Minshuku Tajimaya in Magome. On Monday we return to Tokyo. Our arrival/departure depends on the train/bus, at this point. Check-in time at Tajimaya is after 15:00 and check-out time is before 10:00am.

Sorry,I remember hyperdia.
Hyperdia | Timetable and Route Search in Japan.

I recommended "Takayama→Mino Oota→Tajimi→Nakatsugawa".
But you don't need to worry fare and seat fee.I correct recommendation.
Takayama→Nagoya→Nakatsugawa.
You should change train only once. It's not confusing.
How about Route2?
Hyperdia | SearchResult

Takayama→Nagoya.not so frequent.
Click "Station timetable" of Takayama on Route2 and check it.
Nagoya→Nakatsugawa. At least three trains per hour on day time.
Click "Station timetable" of Nagoya and check it too.
Nakatsugawa→Magome.Local bus. check the linked page on my last post.

Are you traveling with an 8-year-old? If so, I must say in all honesty that the Takayama - Magome part of your trip will be pretty tough on the child. That is 4-5 hours of traveling with at least two transfers. I won't say it's impossible but it would certainly border on it.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. My daughter is a pretty tough and experienced traveler for an 8-yr-old, but of course your points are well taken.

It seems the best route is to go back to Nagoya from Takayama, then on to Magome from there.

You can take a rest and lunch around Nagoya St.Spending one or two hours there is not a problem.
Why don't you try restaurants at 51F ?

Question 2012 Takayama to Magome & then Tsumago to Kyoto - 02-25-2012, 08:23 PM

It is now 2012 and I have the same question. I am not sure if I completely understand the previous response and if the suggested route was JR. We are traveling with JR Passes but if there is a shorter method (bus, local line) - I think we might be able to handle it.

Traveling from Takayama to Magome on April 5 (Thurs)

Traveling from Tsumago to Kyoto on April 8 (Sun)
This looked like I would travel to Nagoya and then take the Shinkensen to Kyoto but is that correct?

Any help or pointers greatly appreciated!
